How to Recognise a Failing Care Home

This week I would like to help you to recognise when a care home is starting to run into difficulties and perhaps list some of the indicators that a particular care home may need some special intervention.  These do not include the obvious ones where there are CQC or LA issues.

  • There are complaints outstanding from relatives
  • The telephone is not answered promptly.
  • Occupancy is trending down
  • There is not a waiting list for residents
  • The manager keeps changing
  • There is constant staff turnover
  • Agency costs are high
  • There is a lack of laughter in the home
  • The staff spend more time with each other than with the residents
  • The staff do not enjoy their day to day work.
  • The profitability of the care home is low.
