This is our first blog and it is useful to be aware that we contribute to a number of groups on LinkedIn and we are always happy to have others who are interested in the elderly care sector to link in to us and to join our group.

This week I would like to help you to recognise when a care home is starting to run into difficulties and perhaps list some of the indicators that a particular care home may need some special intervention. These do not include the obvious ones where there are CQC or LA issues.
- There are complaints outstanding from relatives
- The telephone is not answered promptly.
- Occupancy is trending down
- There is not a waiting list for residents
- The manager keeps changing
- There is constant staff turnover
- Agency costs are high
- There is a lack of laughter in the home
- The staff spend more time with each other than with the residents
- The staff do not enjoy their day to day work.
- The profitability of the care home is low.
